Wooden packaging is making headlines
In the newspaper!
In its January issue, RIA, a specialist magazine for the food and drink industry, discusses lightweight wooden packaging in an article entitled ‘A New Future for Wood’.

Lines that move

Local sourcing
“… wooden packaging relies on local supply chains that reduce the carbon footprint. In France, 90 per cent of wooden packaging comes from sustainably managed forests located within a radius of less than 200 kilometres.”

Unexpected features
“…Recently, markets other than fresh produce have opened up to producers of wooden packaging: the ready-meal sector. In 2019, Fleury Michon launched a range of meals packaged in thermoformed wooden trays developed by Lacroix Emballages. “We opted for the wooden tray because it suited our new production process,” explains Stéphane Merlet, head of packaging at Fleury Michon. “The packaging had to be able to withstand being cooked twice: at our premises in a new open oven and by the end consumer. Wood has enabled us to bring products to market with a higher organoleptic quality than is possible with a plastic tray.”

” … Despite the obstacles, the outlook for growth remains positive. Research and development is opening up new possibilities, particularly with hybrid applications combining wood and biopolymers to provide certain barriers…”
